Living in an almost invulnerable body is not always as excellent as most people would think. Al Elric knows this firsthand, as he was forced to live thus far as a disembodied soul alchemically bonded to a suit of steel armor. While he may not be killed or hurt by anything that would otherwise be detrimental to humans, he is also bereft of the ability to feel anything, not having any skin, or organic body capable of feeling, for that matter.
The armored shell has often led people to think that it is actually Alphonse Elric who is the Fullmetal Alchemist, and not his diminutive brother Edward. Despite his hulking and brutish appearance, compared to his brother Edward, Al is quite the pacifist. Never one to start a fight, he is always among the cooler heads when any kind of conflict erupts, as opposed to his brother who has often been likened to a powder keg, liable to explode anytime.
Further contradicting his large and intimidating stature is Al's perennial love for small cats, another expression of his longing for warmth, love, and the gentle caress of another's touch.
